About the Computer Center
¡@¡@The computer center was established on the Cijin Campus in August 1982 with only a computer classroom equipped with 8-bit PCs to support the fundamental computer education of the school. The first server, a VAX 11/730 mini system and peripheral equipment, were purchased in May 1983. A terminal classroom was also established to provide an environment for teaching and research. The design and promotion of school administration computerization also began at the same time. Following the IT advancement and the increasing IT needs, all 8-bit PCs were replaced in July 1990 by two computer classrooms equipped with 16-bit PCs.

¡@¡@The school moved to its new campus in Nanzih in 1991, and the computer center was situated on the 5/F and 6/F of the auditorium in the school library. To achieve the goal of resource and information sharing, we actively planned a campus network system, and the related software and hardware equipment, and the computerization process of the school administration. In September 1992, an IBM53H server system and accessories were purchased and a computer classroom with Internet connection was established, and the development of software for school administration also began. In addition, to reinforce academic exchange, we successfully completed the connection to the TANet in September 2003 to expand to the worldwide academic networks. We also purchased the CAD server (IBM560) and accessories and established another computer classroom with an Internet connection.

¡@¡@Since February 1994, besides purchasing 32-bit PCs for establishing a computer classroom with an Internet connection, we implemented in October 1995 a web-based learning environment with a Novell system in order to maximize the effectiveness of web-based instruction. Besides the IBM 53H, IBM560 and ALOTS7000 server systems, the center has 3 computer classrooms (all PCs were upgraded to Pentium-III 500 or higher during 2000-2001), one CAD/CAM classroom and various peripherals and accessories. In October 1999, the campus and student dormitory ATM fiber network phases 1 and 2 were completed for teachers and staff to connect to the Internet via the TANet. In March 2001, the networking system of computer classrooms and student dormitories was changed to ADSL provided by HiNet to increase the networking speed on campus.
